Same People, Same Place, Different Era
2025
Photography body of work with Canon Rebel T7.
As the title implies, this body of work shows a family gathering in the same place and with the same people as we had done many years ago. The sequence both starts and ends with contrasting images of an old photo book with images from the gatherings long ago. It is so interesting to see how the unique interactions and activities between everyone has altered over time. I tried to represent these well, in addition to showing the memorable and forgettable moments of a family gathering or vacation, there are beautiful sunsets and fun game nights, but also down time where people are on their phone or working. I attempted to capture many candid moments (despite the annoyance of my family) and emotions present in the subjects. In addition to posed and candid portraiture, I experimented with taking a handful of action shots in motion whether it is skim boarding by the ocean or a game of pool. There is a bit of a stark contrast between the first two thirds and the last, bordered by the only vertical format image reminiscent of a portal or doorway. From then on the images are void of people, shot from a lower vantage point, and are generally darker. This represents the point in a vacation or gathering when you start packing up to leave and the once lively house with the family you have spent the week with is empty. The lower vantage point also relates the current day gathering to the old ones when I was a child and my eye line was much shorter as I explored the house and ran through the hallways. I hope this connects with people and their own family gatherings whether recent, or from their childhood.
