Can of Horse

2023

Wood carving sculpture with nickel wall mount.
6” x 9” x 11”
Formed with hand tools and a Dremel out of an old part of railroad lumber for a 3D design project. The project was to create a piece that morphs two similarly shaped objects together. I knew I wanted to combine an organic shape and object with a more man-made and rigid object. After discovering an old, large chunk of lumber I could use, I ended up making a horse head whose cylindrical snout transforms into the top of a soda can (or an Arnold Palmer Arizona specifically because that is what I had with me as reference). I used a bandsaw to form the general shape before hours and hours of shaving in the details with hand rasps and a Dremel for the can lid. To mount on the wall, I cut out a piece of nickel and sawed out a keyhole shape as my first introduction into metalworking. This piece went on to receive a Merit Award and was presented at the entrance of the Giertz Gallery for a couple months.
